With each day that passes, incontinence becomes less and less of a taboo. At Vivactive, we’ve been putting in serious work to try and normalise the conversation surrounding incontinence. In this article we’ll be debunking four of the most common myths surrounding incontinence.
1: Incontinence is an inevitable part of ageing
It really isn’t. Contrary to popular belief, bladder and bowel problems are not a normal part of growing older. While age presents a higher risk of developing incontinence, it’s not a certainty. It can develop from a mix of lifestyle choices, medical conditions, and muscle weakness, not just your age. By leading a healthy lifestyle (healthy eating, drinking enough water, keeping a healthy weight, not smoking) and engaging in pelvic floor exercises you can significantly reduce the chances of developing incontinence.
2: Only women experience incontinence
Incontinence affects women more than any other group, this is true, but it’s something experienced by all genders. Men, women and everyone in between can experience incontinence due to things like prostate problems, neurological conditions, or certain medications. It’s crucial not to dismiss or stigmatise incontinence as a female-only issue. By recognising incontinence as an issue for everyone, we can nurture a more supportive and understanding environment for all.
