How to dispose of adult nappies
Why is proper disposal of adult nappies important?
How to dispose of adult nappies at home
Fold the used nappy inwards, bringing the sides together to form a compact parcel. This helps to prevent any leakage or spillage. Use the adhesive tapes or tabs attached to the nappy to secure it in the folded position. For extra security and hygiene, you can wrap the folded nappy in a sheet of toilet paper or a nappy sack before placing it in the disposal bag.
Place the folded and secured nappy in a dedicated nappy disposal bag. These bags are often scented to help mask any odours. If you don't have nappy disposal bags, you can use any sturdy plastic bag, such as a grocery bag or a small bin liner. Ensure the bag is securely tied to prevent any leaks or smells.
Dispose of the bagged nappy in your general household waste bin. Do not flush nappies down the toilet, as this can cause blockages and plumbing problems.
How to dispose of adult nappies in public
Use designated bins
Many public restrooms, especially those with accessible facilities or baby changing stations, have designated sanitary disposal bins. These bins are specifically designed for the disposal of sanitary products like nappies, pads, and more.
Look for bins with clear markings or labels indicating they are for sanitary waste disposal. These bins are usually lined with thicker, more robust bags to contain any odours and prevent leakage.
If a designated bin isn’t available
If you can't find a designated sanitary bin, wrap the nappy securely in a disposal bag (nappy sack or a securely tied plastic bag) to minimise odours and contain any mess. Place the bagged nappy in a general waste bin within the restroom. Avoid leaving it on top of the bin or on the floor, and if possible try to find a bin with a lid to help contain any odours.
Be considerate
Avoid leaving used nappies in open bins or on bathroom floors. This is unhygienic and inconsiderate to others.
